It was to be disappointment on Saturday afternoon as we went down by the odd goal out of three to Dunstable Town. Prior to kick off Dunstable found themselves at the root of the table but their win saw them climb two places. The best response we could muster up was a second half Aldis Aliu goal who opened up his account for the club with a well placed strike not long after the restart.
Dunstable Town started off the match showing a lot of attacking intent in the opening stages and they were duly rewarded in the 16th minute. A cheap freekick was given away outside the edge of the 18 yard box and the resulting cross in was met by the Dunstable forward who rose highest and found himself unchallenged to loop in his header over Matt Faley in goal. Fifthteen minutes later and Dunstable had doubled their lead after we had again given the ball away cheaply in midfield. The Dunstable forward played a nice 1-2 and managed to drill the ball across our 6 yard box to be met by strike partner at the back post. With 30 minutes on the clock we now had a mountain to climb. We had a couple of chances to cut down the opposition lead, our best couple coming from a Rhys Ellis freekick which hit the post and unfortunately for us bounced the wrong side out of play and a Connor Spinks strike from distance was well saved by the Dunstable man between the sticks, getting down superbly to his left to stop a sure goal, the only time in the half the keeper was truly tested.
Just 10 minutes after the restart and Aldis Aliu came up with a goal out of nothing. He cut inside down the right, onto his left foot an hit a cracking low drilled strike from 20 yards which bounced in off the far post and hitting the inside netting of the opposing post with the opposition keeper well beaten. We pressed for the equaliser all half committing men forward with a couple of half chances but in the end we just found that equaliser to be too elusive in the end. We did have a solid penalty shout turned down with 75 minutes on the clock as a Dunstable defender went right through the back of Max Walcott to win the ball just inside the box, some big sighs of relief from all wearing the red and black of Dunstable when the referee indicated a corner kick must to Broadfields' obvious frustration. There was to be some late drama in an otherwise well spirited contest with roughly 5 minutes left on the clock as an opposition player was shown his marching orders for an alleged off the ball elbow. After the man in the middle conversed with his assistant the red card was shown and there were no complaints from the Dunstable man or his teammates as he headed off into the dressing room. It just wasn't to be our day, credit to Dunstable who deserved their win, we found them too hard to break down in the end.
FT: Broadfields United 1-2 Dunstable Town
Best of luck to Dunstable Town for the rest of the season, I'm sure under their new management team and based on the day's performance we will start to see them climb up the table. We are back in action Tuesday night where we travel to Tring Athletic.
