It's a first win in a few games for the Fighting Cocks

On Saturday we put ourselves back on track with a good win away to Baldock Town. Goals from Connor Spinks, Rhys Ellis & Darren Brown saw us leave New Lamb Meadow with all three points. Baldock were themselves coming into this game off the back of a good win on the road at Ardley which made the win all the more impressive.

It was an even contest at the start of the match with both sides exchanging good opportunities at either end of the field. It was Matt Faley in particular for us who was making some top drawer saves which kept the scores level, a double save from a Baldock corner in particular caught the eye. The home sides number 7 was enjoying much of the ball and if Baldock were to take a lead in the fixture you could be sure he would have had some involvement.

Just over midway through the half and Baldock thought they had opened the scoring after a good ball through the middle was taken around Faley by the striker to put into an empty net. In the build up to the goal however the ball had clearly struck the referee changing the direction of the ball and although the official allowed play to continue for a good 10 seconds in which Baldock scored, he eventually blew once the ball hit the net and brought play back to the earlier infringement much to the understandable bemusement of the home side. It was just one of a number of odd decisions made throughout the game that went against both sides. Just before the halftime break with 42 minutes on the clock Rhys Ellis won the ball in midfield from the home sides goal kick, brought the ball down to play a 1-2 with Jamie Davey before putting in a through ball to Spinks who had the goalkeeper rushing out to meet him but managed to place his shot just out of reach of the keeper and into the bottom corner of his net.

Fifteen minutes after the restart Rhys Ellis doubled our lead. After taking the corner kick and playing another 1-2 he put in a cross come shot that managed to evade all in the 18 yard box to find the back of the net. The defence and goalkeeper were in two minds as to who should deal with the ball and in the end no one took charge much to Broadfields' delight. With just 7 minutes left on the clock it was cracking strike from Darren Brown that secured the victory for us. Aldis Aliu with a great dribble past the Baldock left back, then delivered a cross deep into the box which escaped the hands of the keeper, who was then taken out mid-air by his own defender who was trying to head clear, but the ball fell to Brown whose venomous strike hit the stanchion from a tight angle. He will struggle to strike a ball that cleanly again this season!

It was great team performance from the players who dug deep in a tough game with a great response from the disappointing result in last weeks home fixture to Aylesbury. It was a good contest from both sides that were looking to play some good football. In a game where there were no bad tackles there happened to be 6 cautions between the sides along with two sin bins for the home side that were borne out of pure frustration at some of the decisions being made.
