A trip up the A1 ends in defeat for the Fighting Cocks to a Biggleswade side that, before kick-off, were sitting high in the table in fourth place. There were several changes made from the midweek win over Harefield.
There was an even opening 45 minutes with Broadfields perhaps having the better chances, although the opposition goalkeeper was rarely tested. Steve Benavides and Shawn Richards were having a lot of joy in the wide areas but couldn’t deliver that killer pass through.
We were still in the changing rooms during the opening stages of the second half and even the opposition hitting the bar early on didn’t wake us up. The Biggleswade wingers had switched wings and down our right their winger was allowed to cut inside unchallenged and lay off to the centre midfielder who took a touch at the feet and managed to find the inside of the post from the edge of the 18 yard box leaving Matt Faley with no chance just 7 minutes into the half.
There was a slow reaction from the boys and in the 65th minute a cross in from down our left wasn’t dealt with and landed at the opposition forwards feet for an easy tap in passed Faley.
Almost instantly a fantastic long ball over the top from Benavides found Anthony Thomas on the edge of the box who turned and leathered the ball into the roof of the net with a thunderous strike.
After pulling the goal back we found ourselves enjoying some periods of good football and were pushing hard for an equaliser and at times looked the most likely to score to score the next. Dom Rhone playing in some brilliant balls in from down the left, but no one was managing to get on to the end of the crosses.
Whilst pushing on for that elusive equaliser the hosts managed to restore their lead late on. With our forwards and midfield pushing on a quick break away down our right the forward managed a decent shot from distance that Faley parried in to the air and before he could claim the Biggleswade right winger had an simple header from 5 yards into the back of the net.
Biggleswade were good for their win though the 2-goal cushion is slightly flattering but that said we didn’t take our chances and were duly punished by the hosts when we committed our mistakes.
Not a great day at the office but we go again Tuesday away against Oxhey Jets who will by vying for vengeance after their weekend result
