Coming into the game we knew we would be in for a tough task on the night, facing a side that boasts numerous youth international footballers as well as a number of first team squad players, it was always going to be difficult but with a high number of our players still out with long term injuries and with only a handful just returning from injury it was going to be just that little bit harder.
The gulf in ability between the two sides was evident from the off as we saw ourselves 4-0 down with just over 10 minutes on the clock. A very one sided half of football although the majority of the half's goals could again be attributed to silly errors at the back and in midfield that we have been guilty of for much of the season, but on the night we were punished at every opportunity against the Brentford side. Midway through the half we recorded our first attempt on target. Connor Spinks doing well down their right to get past the fullback but his attempt on goal was well saved by the Brentford stopper. After that brief flirtation forward by Broadfields, Brentford again got the under hand, adding to their tally with a further three goals before the half was over.
HT: Brentford B 7-0 Broadfields United.
A triple sub at half time was made but that wasn't enough to stop Brentford extending their lead even further. 6 minutes into the half and Brentford forward found himself with a free header from a corner that Darren Brown on the line just couldn't keep out. The only highlight of the game from our end came from a Lewis Gallifent penalty save after 61 minutes. Gallifent, signed on a dual registration from Chertsey Town was making his debut for the club which other than the penalty save, would be one to forget. From the penalty he pulled off a magnificent save to right tipping the ball onto the post before getting back up and making a great second reaction save from the kicker, who was on his hattrick. It must be said it was a extremely harsh penalty to concede but as the season goes on each week it becomes more evident if you scream loud enough for something the officials are going to give it. Gallifent can take a lot of credit from the game, he pulled off some brilliant saves all night and without him in the sticks the score line could and in all honesty should have been more.
If the night wasn't going bad enough as it already was we then had to see out the remaining 15 minutes of the match with 10 men after a bad injury to Stevie Ward who was taken to hospital for stitches after receiving a deep laceration to his leg. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch soon. Another player that can be added to our ever growing injury list and it marked a fifth game in a row where it looks like we have lost a player for at least a number of weeks. After the injury Brentford again added a few more to the scoresheet with the final goal coming just before the final whistle with that putting an end to our misery.
FT: Brentford B 11-0 Broadfields United.
A night to forget for The Fighting Cocks. Best of luck to Brentford B in the next round of the cup where they will face Hanwell Town. Also a thanks to the St John Ambulance staff and Brentford physio’s who helped see to Stevie’s injury. Finally, a thank you to Northwood FC for hosting the game on the night.
For us meanwhile, attention now turns back to the league and Saturday afternoon where we travel to face Holmer Green, where it looks like we will again be down to the bare bones.
