Broadfields began the first of their pre-season friendlies against Belstone FC of the Hertfordshire County League on Saturday 20th July. After winning the Alec Smith Cup and finishing 5th in the league, Broadfields were looking to build on last season's strong campaign and improve on their league standing, and the hard work began on Saturday. Manager Ryan Duffy took 17 players to the game and the squad was utilised in near 30 degree temperatures.
Broadies started the game strongly and were controlling the midfield when they fell behind to a strike against the run of play which saw Belstone take an early lead. Soon however the dominance began to show with Ben Gill and Liam Bird dictating the middle of the pitch, a well won free kick from Billy Smith on the edge of the box saw Ben Gill convert and the scores were level. Smith was on fire and running the Belstone defence ragged when he popped with a well taken goal to make it 2-1. Strong individual performances from a number of youngsters pleased the manager including [Jack Webster, Matt Conlon and Jake Boggins. It wasn’t until the final 20 minutes that the young Broadfields team began to tire and Belstone began to pressure the away teams goal area. Belstone eventually equalised but Broadfields had enough about them to squeeze a winner in the dying minutes through a well taken Gill goal to leave them 3-2 winners on the day. A good result and a good team performance.
